Pool Maintenance Hacks that Will Save you Money

Buying the proper cleaning materials for your pool is always recommended but if you are like most pool owners, it is very likely that you’d want to save some money on pool maintenance costs.

This can be done by using the following tricks:

Use your gym sock to stabilize your pool

Wait, what? Hear us out. This will make sense in a few seconds. Adding your pool stabilizer (cyanuric acid) directly into pool water can turn the water milky. To ensure that this does not happen, use the gym sock as a cyanuric acid bag. Place the powder in the sock and then tie it tightly with a string. After that, go ahead and place the gym sock in the skimmer. This trick will allow the acid to dissolve slowly into the pool.

According to our experts, the stabilizer inside the gym sock will take about 48 hours to dissolve completely.

Detect leaks with food coloring

If you recently noticed that you are losing water from your pool, it may be time to pinpoint where the leak is coming from. To make this job easier, you can detect leaks with food coloring. Try the area near your skimmer or floor drains. Other common areas are the jets and the liner.

Soapy water can help you find air leaks

Do air bubbles keep appearing in your pool? You can detect where they are coming from by filling a spray bottle with soapy water. Use this to spray your pump lid and the plumbing to find the leak. If you find bubbles in any of these areas then you’ve found the culprit.

An oily pool can be solved by five tennis balls

With all the sweat, natural oils, cosmetics, and sunscreen all mixed into the water, you’d have oily pool water in no time. Oil build up in pools may be natural but it doesn’t mean it has to stay that way.

With the help of its velvety surface, a tennis ball can easily absorb oil. Throw in five tennis balls inside your skimmer so that they can absorb the oil in your pool.

Put a pantyhose over your skimmer

Since a pantyhose is made from fine material, it is able to stop debris from going into your filter. This will lengthen your filter paper’s lifespan and that of your cartridge too. This is a big deal since filter paper, although changed only annually, can be quite expensive. Filter cartridge replacement can be quite costly as well. Using this trick will also lessen the time you allot for cleaning the filter.

Use baking soda to balance pool water

The secret to a balanced and clear pool water is baking soda. You can use it to adjust the water’s alkalinity to proper levels.
